At Maven Medical Arts in Draper, UT, we believe that there is nothing better than helping a client feel themselves again and look naturally beautiful. That is why we are proud to offer Sculptra: a life-changing injectable that will help you look like you did years ago. While other injectables push up space below wrinkles, this filler actually stimulates collagen production.
What Is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an FDA-approved dermal filler unlike any other on the market. While other dermal fillers plump up treated areas by adding temporary volume, this dermal filler is designed with longevity in mind. It encourages the deepest layers of your skin to produce collagen. Collagen is the protein responsible for keeping your skin looking healthy, hydrated, radiant, and beautiful.
How Does it Work?
Sculptra filler is a dermal filler featuring the active ingredient PLLA, or poly-L lactic acid. When this chemical compound is injected into an area of the body with extensive volume loss, the PLLA absorbs water from the area over the course of a day or two. It will look like nothing has happened at first, and this is to be expected.
Remember, this augmentation method is designed for long-term results. After six weeks, you will start to see the effects of your body producing its own collagen. Eight to 12 weeks after your first treatment session, you will see the final results of the treatment. These results will last roughly two years before you need a maintenance session.
How Many Treatment Sessions Will I Need?
Depending on the extent of the volume increase you’re looking for, you may need between two and three initial sessions spaced around six weeks apart. During your initial consultation, we will assess your current aesthetic and review your aesthetic goals to identify how many sessions you can expect to need.
How Many Doses Will I Need?
This will depend on several factors, including how much collagen you already have, the health of your collagen, the aesthetic goals you are trying to accomplish, and your age. On average, clients looking for anti-aging for the face typically require one vial of PLLA per decade of age.
In other words, clients who are 25 and have just started to develop facial wrinkles typically need no more than 2.5 vials to restore their smooth face. Clients who are 70 will typically require seven vials to restore the appearance of their youth. For a non-invasive butt lift, you may need between 20 and 30 vials injected over two or three sessions.
Where Is This Injectable Typically Used?
This injectable can be used virtually anywhere that is experiencing volume loss, moderate-to-severe wrinkles, and sagging skin. Some clients seek this treatment to lift and tighten skin and add volume to the buttocks. Others use it to erase wrinkles and reduce the appearance of bulging veins on the backs of the hands.
Older clients often use this treatment to minimize the appearance of wrinkles on the chest while non-invasively tightening chest skin. Finally, clients of all ages use this treatment to address age-related concerns affecting the face, such as lines, wrinkles, folds, and loose, sagging skin. It is often used to re-contour the cheeks and temples, as well.
How Should I Prepare for Treatment?
To prepare for treatment, you must first come in for an initial consultation. During this consultation, we will review your medical history and assess your current health. With this information, we can provide you with a comprehensive list of how to prepare for treatment.
For instance, if you suffer from certain blood diseases, you must stop taking blood thinners for one to two weeks prior to treatment. If you have a history of cold sores, you should take preventative medication in the 10 days leading up to your treatment.
Are There Any Aftercare Steps I Have to Follow?
We strongly encourage our clients to massage the treated areas using the “Rule of 5.” Massage the areas for five minutes at a time, five times daily, for five days starting on the first day of treatment. This stimulation plays a huge role in kick-starting the collagen production process.
Feel free to gently use an icepack for three to five minutes at a time. Do your best to avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, and NSAIDs within 24 hours of treatment.
Is it Safe?
This treatment is absolutely safe. It has been used since 1999 without reports of significant risks or side effects. More importantly, it has been FDA-approved to treat lipoatrophy since 2004 and wrinkles and folds since 2014. When considering any aesthetic service, looking for FDA approval is crucial.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration puts pharmaceuticals through rigorous double-blind, third-party clinical trials to evaluate safety and efficacy. There is no higher standard when it comes to identifying if a given treatment is safe and effective.
