Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that can treat nearly any skin imperfection imaginable. At Maven Medical Arts in Draper, UT, Microneedling in Utah we perform this treatment with the SkinPen device. This is the only Class II, FDA-approved dermal roller in existence. Today, we reveal everything you need to know about this treatment.
Microneedling refers to a skin rejuvenation treatment that involves penetrating the skin with dozens of tiny needles. One of the most significant benefits of the SkinPen is that the gauge of the needles is thinner than with at-home dermal rollers and other medical-grade devices, meaning it is more effective and not painful. As importantly, the depth at which the needles penetrate your skin is customizable.
How Does It Work?
Microneedling works by stimulating your body’s production of collagen. Collagen is a protein found in the foundational layers of your skin. It is responsible for just about every visible aspect of your skin you can imagine. For instance, it adds volume to fill in moderate-to-severe wrinkles. It also tightens and lifts the skin, like a non-invasive facelift.
Where Is it Usually Used?
Another compelling benefit of collagen induction therapy is that it can be used virtually anywhere. For instance, men often use this treatment to address acne scarring on the back. Women often use this treatment to address stretch marks affecting the lower abdomen, inner thighs, outer thighs, and buttocks.
Men are more likely than women to use this treatment to address the skin laxity of the chest. Men and women alike are highly likely to use this treatment to address signs of aging, like sunspots, age spots, wrinkles, and volume loss affecting the face. Finally, it is often used to rejuvenate the hands after volume loss occurs due to illness.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
During your initial consultation, we will assess your current aesthetic and review your aesthetic goals. From there, we can give you an idea about how many treatment sessions you can expect to need. For collagen induction, you may need between one and three treatment sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.
For the reduction of deep stretch marks, surgical scars, acne scars, or scars from traumatic injuries, you may need between three and six treatment sessions. For the treatment of keloid scars, you will most likely need six treatment sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
The treatment process itself takes roughly 30 minutes. However, you may be in our office for up to two hours. While the needles used during this treatment are fairly fine, some clients feel more comfortable with a topical anesthetic cream applied to the treatment area. It can take up to an hour for this local anesthetic to take effect.
Before treatment, we must also sanitize the treatment area with an alcohol-based cleanser. This also takes time. During your initial consultation, we will give you an estimate on how long you can expect treatment to take based on the size of the areas you are trying to treat and whether you want an anesthetic applied.
How to Prepare for Treatment
To prepare for your treatment session, you must come in for an initial consultation. During this initial consultation, we will review your medical history, including over-the-counter and prescription medications you have taken recently and any nutritional supplements. We will also assess your current health and discuss your concerns and questions.
If you are taking any medications or supplements that can thin your blood, you’ll need to stop for 14 days prior to treatment. If you are taking these for medical reasons, such as heart disease or a blood disease, you must ask your primary care physician if it is safe for you to stop taking these medications for two weeks.
What to Expect After Treatment
Immediately after treatment, you will notice that your skin is tighter. If there were significant laxity issues, you will notice immediately that it seems lifted. Regarding downtime or recovery, there is essentially none. You are free to return to work, school, or whatever leisure activities you had scheduled for the day.
While there are no restrictions on your daily activities after treatment, there are a few aftercare steps you should take. For instance, you are free to apply makeup or other cosmetics immediately after treatment. However, you must make sure that you apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to the treated area.
For clients with more melanin in their skin, we recommend at least an SPF 30 sunscreen. For clients with less melanin in their skin, we strongly recommend at least an SPF 55 sunscreen. Sunscreen should be reapplied as directed on the bottle and you should minimize your time outdoors between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM as much as possible.
